WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS ?
Interconnectedness is inevitable and its good.
But will we like it ?
THE CONCEPT
When you connect your computer to the internet ,you are simply connecting it to a huge number of other computer These computer are able to understand the requests sent in by your personal computer and are able to exchange information with it so that you get your answers.
The idea behind IoT is to connect commonplace machines and appliances-say your microwave or air conditioner at home and then use their ability to exchange information to make our lives easier.
For example: a home automation system would connect your bedroom lights , air conditioner and the water heater at your place ti a single network that you can control form your smartphone. So that when you begin your hour-long commute back from work in the sticky and dusty heat in your place, you can switch on your air conditioner 30 min before you reach home.
Where it’s most common, in Britain at least, is home heating and energy use – partially because the government is pushing energy companies to roll out smart meters (although it has been questioned whether it can be delivered on schedule). They have clever functions that let you turn on heating remotely, set it to turn down the temperature if it’s a sunny day, or even turn off when there’s no-one home. Some can tell the latter with motion-sensing cameras, or simply by seeing that your smartphone has left the premises.
IoT is more than smart homes and connected appliances, however. It scales up to include smart cities think of connected traffic signals that monitor utility use, or smart bins that signal when they need to be emptied – and industry, with connected sensors for everything from tracking parts to monitoring crops.
